Why don’t we believe in low carb diet?
The controversy has been started since a long time ago. Low carb diets such as Atkins diet or Neanderthin has been proven as one successful method to help US people who struggling with their obesity problem.
However, we do not believe in low-carb diets because it’s dangerous and simply dangerous. Despite low carb diet is popular and has successfully helped many people (especially in the US), it has some dangerous side effects that you need to know.
Explanation:
“Low carb” means “low carbohydrate”. Basically, low carb diet is a method that believes carbohydrate is the main source of obesity problem. Dr. Atkins and other believers in low carb diets claimed that if we consume less carbohydrate, we will decrease our insulin’s production. By doing this, we will prevent our body to burn our stored fats. Atkins said we won’t gain weight by preventing our body to eat carbohydrate.
The Success Story:
Around 40,000,000 people in United States of America has been following Atkins diet and (or) other low carb diets. This success story happened thanks to Atkins, who successfully proved his claims. Univ. of Pennsylvania Medical School and Annals of Internal Medicine believe people who follow low carb diet plans would lose weight faster than those who follow low fat diets. According to the latest research, low carb diet plans are safe for short period of time and being considered as one of the most effective weight loss plans.
BUT….
There is always a “BUT” behind controversial success story. Low carb diets may be successful BUT there are many risks involved within this weight loss program. First, low carb diet plan will decrease your glycogen. When you consume enough carbohydrate, your liver and muscles will form enough glycogen to help you prevent muscle loss and dehydration. The truth is: If you follow low carb diet plan, you lose your muscles and you dehydrate. That's why you lose weight so fast. Not because you lose your stored fat or something else.
With the loss of glycogen, your body will start to become passive and you will get tired much faster than normal people even if you take regular exercise every day. In the end, your metabolic rate will be decreased which means it is extremely unhealthy for our body. The story doesn’t end there. Lack of glycogen may also cause atrophy. This will happen because glycogen plays important part in muscle contraction. Without enough glycogen, your body will contract less and it will cause atrophy.
Of course believers in low carb diets have denied this argument. However, Dr. Ian Smith reported that people who have stopped their low carb diet programs are gaining weight again. They gain weight because when they eat enough carbohydrate they will restore their muscles and glycogen.
Don’t forget that without enough carbohydrate to burn your excess fat, your body will produce ketones. This is not good. The production of ketones causes painful headache, nausea, and bad breath. By consuming less carbohydrate and more fat, you are just adding more risk to your heart. Low carb diets may be healthy for your cholesterol level but it’s definitely will increase your chance of being attacked by heart problems.
The Ugly Picture of Low Carb Diet
A believer in low carb diet ever said that you can enjoy as many fat as you want as long as you avoid the consumption of carbohydrate. Well, many junk food restaurants use this claim to promote their brands and products. Popular junk food restaurants now always claim that their foods are healthy. Thanks to the low carb diet, they get more customers and give more troubles to our health.
There are some people who have “survived” from low carb diet such as Jody Gorran or Mari K. Madlem. You can find the story here. I believe these stories might stop you to follow low carb diet plans. Even a 16 year old girl committed suicide after she got frustrated by low carb diet’s side effects.
Recommendation
As the title of this long article, I don’t believe in low carb diets and I hope you don’t either. To lose weight you need to know your problems and reduce your excess fat in long term. Weight loss (fat loss) is a health problem and you need to make sure that your diet plan is good enough for your health in long run. Low carb diet of course is not one of my plans here.
